During the mayoral election campaign the issue of young people's behaviour on the buses came up more than any other transport issue.
Boris promised to deal with it and today we completed the a series of policies which have and will reduce crime and antisocial behaviour on the buses.
We already have more uniformed presence on the transport network than at any point in the last 25 years, last year we introduced a behaviour code for recipients of the Zip card and today we launched a payback scheme for young people who breach that code.
Young people who misbehave on bses will have their passes confiscated and will either have to wait a year to get it back or can earn their passes back with voluntary work.
This plan will improve behaviour, teach responsibility and introduce young people to volunteering.
Transport crime has already fallen since Boris brought in his plans and this will help to continue that improvement.

Who will confiscate the passes and who will decide which kids should have them taken away?
In 25 years of commuting every day I have never seen a police officer on a train, only 'revenue inspectors'. I saw police pack fighting Palace and Charlton supporters onto a train full of commuters a while ago and leave passengers to it. That's my only experience so far. Where are all those police we saw around 9/11 at stations?
Taking away kids' passes is a joke, they have fake IDs for all sorts of things.
How can anyone know that crime has fallen on public transport? There's no-one to report it to. When was the last time you got a train late at night from London?
Claiming that crime had gone down since Boris arrived is farcical. What's your evidence for this?
Violent crime on buses in the London Borough of Hounslow has risen by 14% since Boris Johnson became Mayor: http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/west-london-news/local-hounslow-news/2009/06/18/more-than-200-attacks-on-hounslow-bus-users-109642-23914274/
Helen,
I know that Boris and Kit take this issue very seriously. I'm glad that the overall figures have fallen and I hope that these new measures will help to bring the figures down even further.
Violent crime will not be dealt with using Earn Your Travel Back, those offences will go through the normal criminal justice system.
Adam & David,
The procedure for confiscation is well established, last year TFL took over 3,800 zip cards.
The crime figures are from the Met, while not ever bus has a police officer on it they all have drivers and they are the main source of reporting.
Thank you for the answer.
David
"The procedure for confiscation is well established,"
So what is it?
