Unfortunately my friends, Christine and Andrew, didn't get in in the Downham by-election yesterday. They did get a big swing in their favour in what has been for a long time a rather left leaning ward. The seat was retained by the Lib Dems but with a greatly reduces share of the vote.
With both the Lib Dem and the Labour votes falling it's clear that the Conservatives are going to take on Labour in the council elections next year.
I also notice that in Sevenoaks the BNP came from no-where to win, they seemed to have been the main beneficiary of ex Labour votes.

I really don't know who to feel more sorry for, the people of Downham or Swanley. Both have grabbed thye sh*tty end of the stick and are going to be represented by thoroughly distasteful and reprehensible characters.
Do you have any idea how this might have happened? I always thought the folk of Sevenoaks and Bromley had more sense. Complacency is voting, especially at the moment is very very dangerous. People need to get out and use their vote to stop this happening.
James, your tory colleague cllr britton was telling anyone who would listen yesterday that they'd won a seat, it was looking good etc..yet you came third (again). This was also the case in the whitefoot bye in 2007 - tory leaflets announced it was neck-and-neck etc, result on a knife edge, its looking good etc...yet you lost by 500 votes.
There have been 10 bye-elections in Lewisham since 2002 and you haven't won a single one. When will the drought end?
AngryBritain - the people of Bromley do have morse sense. Downham is in Lewisham!
Hi Chris,
How long was the drought in Orpington?
James,
Top putdown!
At the last general election Orpington was certainly an all time classic. Chris and his buddies expended all of their hot air telling us how Orpington was the number one target, it was a sure-fire Lib-Dem winner, etc, etc. The look on their faces that night after the election drubbing was unforgettable.
Enough even to make one up sticks in humiliation and flee to Lewisham!
